Alkaline ester hydrolysis

LC2.4.3.5
Alkaline ester hydrolysis
Alkaline ester hydrolysis

Description

Alkaline ester hydrolysis (saponification) destroys the ester bond in a carboxylic acid ester beyond repair. If an ester is saponified, the salt of the carboxylic acid and an alcohol are formed. In this case, the carboxylic acid is present as a carboxylate ion, which does not undergo an esterification reaction. In this experiment the students carry out a saponification of acetic ethylester and discover that the reaction is not reversible.
