Oxidation of alkanols

LC2.3.3.5
Oxidation of alkanols
Oxidation of alkanols

Description

In this experiment, the different reactions of primary, secondary and tertiary alkanols with potassium permanganate as oxidant are investigated. To do this, potassium permanganate is added to 1-butanol, 2-butanol and tert-butanol (2-methylpropan-2-ol). While primary and secondary butanol are oxidised, the tertiary 2-methylpropan-2-ol is not. Unlike 1-and 2-butanol, no colour change takes place here. The students realise that the structure of a substance has a great influence on possible reactions. They learn about the substance group of aldehydes and ketones.
