Formic acid as a preservative
Formic acid as a preservative

Description

Due to its disinfecting properties, formic acid is an excellent preservative. It was used throughout the EU as a preservative with the number E 236 for food until 1998. In the meantime, formic acid has been banned as a preservative in food. Nevertheless, this use of the carboxylic acid can be demonstrated in the laboratory. In this experiment, the students will learn how juice is preserved with the preservative formic acid.
