Detection of hydrogen and carbon

LC2.1.2.1
Detection of hydrogen and carbon
Detection of hydrogen and carbon

Description

In this experiment the students show that organic compounds consist of carbon and hydrogen. In this experiment, urea is heated together with copper oxide as an example of an organic substance. The copper oxide reacts to form copper. The gases that escape are detected as CO2 in calcium hydroxide solution. Hydrogen can be detected indirectly through the water droplets formed.
