Description

In a nucleophilic substitution reaction in organic chemistry, one functional group is replaced (= substituted) by another in a reaction. In a nucleophilic substitution reaction, an anion or a Lewis base attacks.

In this experiment, the hydroxyl group of alcohols is replaced with a chloride. When carrying out the substitution reaction, the students recognise that the speed of the substitution depends on whether a primary, secondary or tertiary alcohol is present.
