Synthesis and detection of propanal

LC2.3.4.2
Synthesis and detection of propanal
Synthesis and detection of propanal

Description

You can produce aldehydes through the oxidations of primary alcohols. In this experiment the students will produce propanal from 1-propanol using copper(II) oxide as a representative for the substance group of aldehydes. The resulting product is then detected using the Schiffs's reagent. Through this, the students learn a method for the representation of aldehydes and that aldehydes can be detected with the Schiff's reagent.
