The Tollens reaction

LC2.3.4.1
The Tollens reaction
The Tollens reaction

Description

Aldehydes and ketones both have a carbonyl group. Because of the terminal carbonyl group of aldehydes, they have a reducing effect and can be oxidised to carboxylic acids. In contrast, ketones cannot be oxidised to carboxylic acids. In the Tollens reaction, the reducing effect of the aldehydes is demonstrated by the reduction of silver ions to elemental silver. The students then recognise the differences in reactivity between aldehydes and ketones and can thus draw conclusions about the structure of the compounds.
