Description

Catalysts lower the activation energy of a reaction and as a result accelerate it. The decrease in activation energy takes place through a modified reaction mechanism in which the catalyst plays a decisive role. Usually, a so-called catalytic cycle takes place too quickly to see it with the naked eye. The catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by iron(III) chloride proceeds more slowly, for the students to be able to observe the formation and decomposition of an intermediate product.
