Producing soap using sodium carbonate

LC4.5.3.2
Producing soap using sodium carbonate
Producing soap using sodium carbonate

Description

You can make soap by saponification of fats or by neutralisation of fatty acids. In this experiment, the students will produce soap using the carbonate process, i.e. by neutralising fatty acids. The students learn that this reaction is easy to perform and that the resulting soap can be used directly in further experiments. They investigate the foaming behaviour and emulsifying capacity of the soap produced.
