Description

The COM4LAB courses in transmission and reception technology explain the structure of classic and modern radio systems as well as the modulation and demodulation of signals step by step. The properties of the signals are analysed in more detail in the time and frequency domains. For this purpose, the board contains a complete transmitter and receiver system. Components can be analysed individually.

The first course Analogue Transmission Techniques AM, DSB, SSB and FM covers the superheterodyne architecture of transmitters and receivers as well as the basic analogue modulation types amplitude modulation (AM), double-sideband modulation (DSB), single-sideband modulation (SSB) and frequency/phase modulation (FM/PM).

The course covers the following topics:

  • receiving and transmitting radio signals in the FM range
  • operation and function of transmitters based on the superheterodyne principle
  • operation and function of receivers based on the superheterodyne principle
  • functionality of mixers in combination with local oscillators (LO)
  • filter structures
  • amplitude modulation (AM)
  • degree of modulation and bandwidth for AM
  • double-sideband modulation (DSB)
  • single-sideband modulation (SSB)
  • generation of upper sideband (USB) and lower sideband (LSB)
  • frequency modulation (FM) and phase modulation (PM)
  • modulation index and bandwidth for FM
  • bandwidth comparison between the modulation types analysed
  • demodulation of AM, DSB, SSB and FM signals
  • task of amplifiers and filters
  • functionality of a band-scanner as a spectrum analyser
  • comparison of different windowings in the FFT

The course …

  • can be displayed and filled out on your own tablet/smartphone/laptop.
  • is platform-independent - a current browser is sufficient.
  • can be distributed to students via QR codes.
  • enables interactive experimenting: The measured values from the Master Unit are automatically made available for evaluation in tables and diagrams. The analysis and documentation of the experiment on the student device can be done at school or at home.
  • can be edited and thus adapted to your own lesson plan.

Technical data

Course licence

  • The course licence is perpetual.
  • One course licence is required for each connected device (PC, tablet or smartphone).
  • Up to four simultaneous connections and thus four course licences are possible per workstation (COM4LAB Master Unit with corresponding COM4LAB Board).
  • The product key is required to activate the course licence via https://register.leylab.de. The COM4LAB course is then accessible in LeyLab and can be used.

System requirements

Scenario 1: The course is shared from LeyLab

  • permanent internet access
  • devices (PCs, tablets or smartphones) with a current browser

Scenario 2: The course is downloaded to the teacher PC and shared from there

  • internet access only during setup of the teacher PC
  • intranet network with a local router
  • PC (Windows 10/11 or macOS)
