System
The Ball and Plate system is controlled by (National Instruments NI) LabVIEW using an NI interface card and demonstrates a classic control problem of balancing a ball on a flat surface and holding its position. It can then be programmed to make the ball follow a circular or any other shaped path on the plate. The unique electromagnetic stage control allows this unstable system to be studied in real time using sophisticated controllers in NI LabVIEW. The progressive nature of the teaching tasks allows the study of the problem from basic principles to advanced control concepts. The product provides a meaningful insight into control engineering at all levels of undergraduate study and allows advanced users to model and control the ball and plate using their own strategy.
Method
The equipment includes student experiments in the laboratory with non-hazardous low voltage. Experimental procedures are carried out using a manual in printed or electronic form.
