Description

Using a single-phase transformer and a power analyser, precise measurements can be carried out to calculate the equivalent circuit diagram of the transformer. The hysteresis of the transformer core is analysed and compared with the iron losses from the open-circuit test. The power analyser measures voltages, currents and phase angles and thus enables the iron losses and hysteresis effects to be determined. The aim of the experiment is to gain a better understanding of the magnetic properties of the transformer iron and to analyse their influence on the overall losses of the transformer.

Learning objectives

  • Protective measures and electrical safety.
  • Setup of power systems according to a circuit diagram.
  • Use of a power analyser as a measuring device.

The AC transformer is analysed in this individual unit. The AC transformer (single-phase transformer) is a standard assembly with many applications throughout electrical engineering. This transformer is suitable for analysing the equivalent circuit diagram with short-circuit, open-circuit and load experiments.

Highlights

The single-phase transformer can be used with the Power Analyser to calculate the equivalent circuit diagram in particular. The hysteresis of the transformer iron is analysed in an experiment and compared with the iron losses from the open-circuit experiment.

Measuring and media system

The experiments can be carried out with the 7731901 machine test CASSY or with the Power Analyser CASSY 727101/727111.

The Power Analyser CASSY Plus 727111 can be quickly operated in all functions directly via the display, the rotary knob and the buttons on the device. All settings and measurement results can be saved on the device and quickly called up again later or simply downloaded.

In addition, the Power Analyser CASSY Plus can be fully controlled in real time via RJ45 Ethernet, W-LAN and USB-C interfaces.

These interfaces can be used by the following software

  • CASSY Lab 2 for drives and energy systems.
  • MATLAB® and LabVIEW™.
  • Lab Docs Editor Advanced.

The following integrated servers are available in the Power Analyser CASSY for the local media connection of at least four end devices simultaneously.

  • TCP server for the CASSY app.
  • DHCP server for use with a direct PC connection or as a Wifi hotspot.
  • HTTP server for the CASSY web app.
  • WebSocket server for WebSocket clients, such as Leybold Lab Doc.
  • VNC server for 1:1 transmission of screen content to remote devices including return channel for control.

For more information, please refer to the product data 727111 of the Power Analyser CASSYs Plus.

Target group

The target group is industrial trainees and students specialising in electrical engineering. The course offers experiments at an intermediate level for the vocational school and at the same time provides the necessary insights into the machine behaviour for a scientific interpretation in the bachelor training. The media connection makes the experiments suitable for demonstration in the classroom or a lecture theatre.

The following equipment includes extended experiments with transformers:

  • E2.2.1.1 Three-phase transformer.
  • E2.2.1.2 Scott transformer.
  • E2.2.1.4 AC toroidal transformer.
  • E2.2.1.5 AC autotransformer.
